Course objectives supported by learning outcomes
The aim of the subject is familiarization with practical possibilities of solving interpersonal communication problems, verbal and non-verbal means with emphasis on model situations in which a worker in building industry can encounter. Another objective of the subject is the introduction to the theory of communication and its practical use, intentional regulation of one´s own communicative behaviour and behaviour of other participants of the communication process and mastering of assertive and tactic actions. Successful graduates of the course: describe basic terms related to the field of interpersonal communication; know the main communication competences; interpret the ways of their use and to explain their importance for a successful performance of their profession.
Learning outcomes
Theoretical knowledge of communication techniques. Practical communication skills usable in construction. Ability to distinguish between assertive and non-assertive behaviour and to apply it. Know how to improve your communication skills.

  • 1. Communication and communication processes.
  • 2. Rhetoric, personal presentation.
  • 3. Verbal communication, paralinguistic components of the communication and introduction to nonverbal communication.
  • 4. The role of nonverbal communication and its relationship to verbal communication in construction.
  • 5. Feedback in communication.
  • 6. Empathy, active listening.
  • 7. Management interviews and principles of discussion.
  • 8. Managerial Communication.
  • 9. Communication in team.
  • 10. The working meeting.
  • 11. Assertiveness and characteristics of assertive behaviour of construction worker.
  • 12. Problems and their causes in the communication of workers in the construction industry. Disturbances in interpersonal communication, communication barriers, conflict management.
