Course objectives supported by learning outcomes
It is a subject based on an experimental basis, therefore its content is not only a theoretical understanding of the physical principles of the technological creation of workpieces, but also a practical measurement of the topography and texture of the surface with the aim of identifying the integrity of the surface and the stress-deformation states of the surface after machining. The topography, texture of the surface is a "memory" of the influence of machining technology, while the purpose of each production technology is mainly efficiency, i.e. increasing production while maintaining the required surface quality. In addition to measuring the desired surface parameters, it is important to understand the principles of topography and surface texture, as this will enable the rational use of all the possibilities of instrumentation and newly developed devices for examining the state of topography and texture of machined surfaces.
Learning outcomes
The subject provides basic ideas about the measurement of topography and surface texture created by various technological processes.
Syllabus
  • 1. Surface integrity – definition and importance of its use for function. 2. Topography and texture of the surface after conventional technologies. 3. Topography and texture of the surface after progressive technologies. 4. Surface and residual stresses after machining. 5. Methods for measuring topography and surface texture. 6. Surface integrity of micro- and nanometric surfaces. 7. Quantitative assessment of topography and surface texture. 8. Normalized and non-normalized characteristics of topography and surface texture. 9. Integral transformation. 10. Evaluation of topography and surface texture by spectral signal analysis techniques. 11. Three-dimensional assessment of topography and surface texture. 12. Perspectives and directions of development in the identification of surface integrity. 13. Application in technical practice – in terms of the link between topography, texture and surface integrity.
