Course objectives supported by learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the value chain, one of the crucial tools for formulating corporate strategy. Graduates of the course will understand the importance, role and function of the value chain, both at the sectoral and corporate level, and will be able to describe its value-creating and supporting activities in a specific selected enterprise.
Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of the subject, the student will:
1. can analyze the internal structure of the industry,
2. understands the concepts of competitiveness, competition and competitive advantage,
3. knows the principles and process of creating a unique value proposition,
4. understands the role, importance and function of the value chain,
5. can characterize the primary activities of the value chain,
6. can characterise the secondary activities of the value chain,
7. know the extended modified forms of the value chain.

  • Seminars:
  • 1. Analysis of the internal structure of the industry.
  • 2. Competitive advantage, measures of competitive advantage (relative price, relative costs).
  • 3. Unique value creation - customer specifications.
  • 4. Unique value creation - needs specification.
  • 5. Unique value creation - relative price.
  • 6. Value chain, its meaning, role and role according to M. Porter.
  • 7. Branch value chains.
  • 8. Description of the value chain at the selected enterprise. Description of primary activities (processes) - input logistics, production, output logistics.
  • 9. Description of primary activities (processes) - marketing, service and after-sales.
  • 10. Description of secondary activities (processes) - purchasing, corporate infrastructure.
  • 11. Description of secondary activities (processes) - Technology development, human resource management.
  • 12. Extension of the value chain according to other authors (Norton, Kaplan, Pall's model, business process framework according to the American organization APQC).

Exam conditions
In the project study, the student will describe the primary and secondary activities of the value chain in the selected enterprise and develop a proposal for their improvement in terms of their added value. He/she will present the study to an audience of students. An intermediate test will test the necessary theoretical knowledge to prepare the project study. For successful completion of the course, a minimum of 70 % in total of the midterm and final assessment is required under the conditions set out below. 20 points can be obtained in the interim assessment, i.e. 20%. A total of 80 points, i.e. 80 %, can be obtained in the final assessment. The overall classification of the course, i.e. points for the final assessment (80 - 0) + points from the continuous assessment (20 - 0): Z~100 - 70, X 69,99 - 30, N 29,99 - 0. A full-time student is required to meet the mandatory 70% attendance in contact classes, i.e. everything except lectures.

Attendance at classes in all forms is dealt with in a separate internal standard of VŠTE (Record of Student Attendance at VŠTE). For full-time students, 70% attendance at classes is compulsory. Information for students with ISP (Individual Study Plan). If a student with an ISP is unable to attend the continuous assessment of a course, he/she will complete the continuous assessment at a time agreed with the teacher. A student with an Individual Study Plan is required to contact the instructor immediately upon approval of the ISP. If the student fails to do so, his/her ISP will not be considered. If students with an ISP have any questions, they may contact the course advisor via email at strakova@mail.vstecb.cz.
