Anotace
Walking is the oldest way of transporting a person from place to place. Nevertheless, in the last decades, insufficient emphasis has been placed on it when planning the development and renewal of settlements in the Czech Republic. In recent decades, public space has been purposefully adapted to car traffic, which degrades it aesthetically, functionally, and air quality. This approach has been gradually changing in recent years. Large cities are once again turning to walk as a basic way of transporting people and are re-adapting their public space to it. The situation is different in small towns in the Czech Republic. Cities, which, due to their size and financial capabilities, are unable to operate public transport, are currently focusing on supporting the parking of cars when modifying public space. This is due to the requirements of the population as well as shortcomings in the legislation and normative basis. The Czech Republic has requirements for walking space formulated only in general in Decree No. 501/2006 Coll. on general requirements for land use and a little more specifically in CTN 73 6110 Design of local roads. These shortcomings in the legislation are addressed by large cities with their local decrees and methodologies. These include, for example, the Manual for the Creation of Public Spaces in the Capital City of Prague. However, small towns do not have such documents. In order to change the situation, the project SVV202104 entitled "Requirements and categorization of the width of pedestrian roads in the context of the type of public space" deals with the recognition of the current state of the width of sidewalks in small towns and aims to develop possible recommendations. The paper informs about the procedure of field research mapping the current state and also deals with the categorization of public space for optimizing the determination of the width of pedestrian roads and in selected cities of the Czech Republic.
