Course objectives supported by learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to make students aware of practical principles which have to be followed when conducting business with representatives of the Chinese culture. In this course, students learn basic aspects needed to create successful business relationships, principles of conducting business meetings, social and professional etiquette when beiing in contact with Chinese business partners. After course completion students increase their awareness of the way of thinking, values and customs of representatives of the Chinese culture. They gain practical knowledge of how to plan and organize business meetings with Chinese partners and how to host Chinese guests.
Syllabus
  • 1. Intercultural communication in business relations, fundamental information about China (geography, population, currency, etc.).
  • 2. Influence of Chinese conventional ideas and rules.
  • 3. Hierarchy and structure of Chinese society.
  • 4. Chinese names to introduce and bond relationships among people important for business contacts.
  • 5. Making contact (telephoning, addressing, invitation, business cards, receiving delegations).
  • 6. Organizing and preparing business meetings with members of the Chinese culture.
  • 7. Business negotiations and professional etiquette in China.
  • 8. Specifics of non-verbal communication of the Chinese culture.
  • 9. Specifics of verbal communication of the Chinese culture.
  • 10. Dining etiquette (dinner, banquet, reception, site selection, toast).
  • 11. Dress code, gift giving and gift receiving, entertainment in China.
  • 12. Building up relationships and visiting Chinese home.
  • 13. Receiving Chinese guests (delegates, duties as host, accommodation, formalities, planning visits, meetings).
