The aim of the course is to introduce students to the basic concepts of database technologies: relational data model, functional The graduates will learn about the conceptual model of a database and the basics of the SQL standard. and the relational schema.

The student is able to describe database technologies, can create a relational data model, functional dependencies, normal forms databases. Graduates of the course will be able to define a conceptual model of a database, relational schema. Core skills The student's main skill is to master the basic constructs of the SQL language according to the standard.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to database technologies. Motivation, data independence and DBMS architecture. Relational data model.
  • 2. Relational algebra. Basic operations.
  • 3. SQL standards (especially SQL 92), introduction to Select querying (basic commands, joins).
  • 4. SQL Select - Nested Select queries.
  • 5. SQL Select - Inner and outer joins, aggregation functions and clustering.
  • 6. Conceptual Modeling. Entities, entity types, constraints, integrity constraints.
  • 7. ER diagram, UML class diagram. Conversion of conceptual model to data model.
  • 8. SQL - data modification language (JMD) and data definition language (JDD); Data types.
  • 9. Functional and dynamic analysis of IS.
  • 10. Functional dependencies.
  • 11. Normal forms and relational database schema design in BCNF.
  • 12. Overview of existing DBMSs.
  • 13. Overview and comparison of existing DBMSs.

To successfully complete the course, it is necessary to achieve the sum of the continuous and final assessment of at least 70% under the conditions set out below.
