Course objectives supported by learning outcomes
The course objective is to deepen studens´ knowledge and language skills to the B1 level accordig to CEFR. Upon successful completion of the course, the students are able to understand the main idea, information and topics they encounter in everyday life at schol, work, free time, etc. STudents are able to communicate in English in most situations they encounter when travelling. They are able to write a simple and clear text on a familiar or interesting topic, descibe their experiences, hopes, dreams and aims, are able to explain and defent their opinions and plans. In spoken and written communication, smaller mistakes (lexical, stylistic, or grammar) may appear, which do not hinder understanding. The aim is the further development of student communication skills with emphasis placed on dialogues, understanding texts, and communication on an everyday topic.
Learning outcomes
Students: 1. understand the message of information expressed in stnadard English (on everyday topics),
2. understand the texts containing vocabulary used in everyday life or work-related topics,
3. are able to spontaneously participate in conversation on a familiar topic or topics from everyday life,
4. are able to tell a story or a plot of a book/ film and describe their reactions and opinions,
5. can write a simple and clear text on a familiar or interesting topic.
Syllabus
  • Seminars:
  • 1. Conversation topics + small talk when meeting new persons, infinitives, verb + infinitives.
  • 2. Gerunds, verb phrases with gerunds. Hobbies, interests, how to be happy.
  • 3. Learning languages. Modals (must, mustn't, have to, don't have to), formal email.
  • 4. At the pharmacy, common illnesses and health problems.
  • 5. Speaking about problems and feelings, giving advice, modal verb should.
  • 6. Phrases with get, sentence stress.
  • 7. Conditionals - first conditional, murphy´s laws.
  • 8. "Confusing" verb pairs, holiday problems.
  • 9. Adverbs of manner, sentence rhytm, possessives, adverbs and adverbials in written communication.
  • 10. conditionals - second condtional, animals and pets.
  • 11. Fears, phobias, treatment. Present perfect simple + for, since.
  • 12. Celebrities, stars. Biographies.
  • 13. Present perfect vs past simple. Writing a biography.
  • 14. In a town. Describing way, giving instructions. Public transport, excuses.
  • 15. Inventions, discoveries, passive voice.
  • 16. Education. used to.
  • 17. Decisions. might/might not (for possibility), word-forming processes.
  • 18. Sport, prepositions of movement. Opinion essay.
  • 19. Lifestyle. Phrasal verbs, word order in sentences.
  • 20. Coincidences, similarities, differences, so/neither + auxiliary verbs.
  • 21. Making phone calls, reactions.
  • 22. Strange stories. Past perfect.
  • 23. Gossip. Say vs tell. Reported speech
  • 24. Questions without auxiliary verbs. General knowledge quiz.

Semester exam 30 %
Exam conditions
Grading of the course both for full-time a part-time students: a semester exam during the semester, written test in the examination period. Successful graduates of the course have to get at least 70 points (from both parts together).

Semester exam:

Semester test 30 % (e.g. speaking exam, essay, listening test, presentation, etc.)

Final test:

Final test using ROPOT in the IS (70 %)

Students in the full-time form of study are required to participate in at least 70 % of the seminars. Shall the students fail to meet this requirement, they are automatically awarded "F" STudents are required to actively participate in the seminars and fulfill the tasks assigned by the teacher
