Course objectives supported by learning outcomes
Steel metallurgy is focused on: steel distribution, production units, secondary metallurgy, casting and characterization of casting defects. Cast iron metallurgy presents: types of foundry cast irons, processes of smelting and production of cast irons, out-of-furnace processing and casting of cast irons together with the characteristics of cast iron defects. The last area is specialized in the metallurgy of non-ferrous metals: alloys of aluminum, magnesium, zinc, copper and others with a focus on charge material, smelting technology, refining methods and characteristics of metallurgical defects.
Learning outcomes
The student will gain theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of metallurgy with a focus on the production of steels, cast irons and non-ferrous metal alloys.

  • 1. Introduction to foundry - meaning, current state and perspectives of foundry technologies 2. Characteristics, division, marking of steels and basic metallurgical reactions 3. Technology and principle of steel production in primary aggregates 4. Steel processing on secondary metallurgy equipment 5. Casting of castings, the course of solidification of castings, defects of castings 6. Basic division of foundry cast irons 7. Characteristics of metallurgical processes of cast iron production 8. Foundry equipment and casting processes of cast irons 9. Production of castings, types of models and molds, division and characteristics of metallurgical defects of cast irons 10. Basic types of alloys Al, Mg, Zn, Cu and Ti etc. and their chemical composition 11. Mechanical, physical and technological properties of foundry alloys 12. Principles of metallurgical processing of foundry alloys and refining methods 13. Basic methods of casting non-ferrous metal alloys, characteristics of alloy defects and their distribution

Exam conditions
Oral presentation on a professional topic, written test, at least 70% participation in seminars. Absences in the range of a maximum of 30% must be excused and the apology must be accepted by the teacher (the reason for the apology is decided by the teacher).

Attendance at classes in all forms solves a separate internal standard of VŠTE (Records of student attendance at VŠTE). For full-time students, 70% attendance at seminars and seminars is mandatory.
