- The course is offered to students of any study field.
- Course objectives supported by learning outcomes
- The aim of the course is to introduce the student to the mechanics of rigid bodies as the mechanics of an elastic continuum, based on calculations of higher mathematics (differential and integral calculus). For engineering students, the knowledge of elasticity and strength is a profiling prerequisite, as the graduate must be able to describe the processes of stress and strain, material properties and perform strength calculations on solids of a given shape. The examples presented from engineering practice are limited to elastic deformations of simple shaped solids under tensile, compressive, bending, shear and torsional forces, as well as combinations of stresses on bars, beams and shafts.
- Learning outcomes
- Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to: - physically and mathematically describe deformations under simple and combined stresses; - define material modules and work with technical tables; - determine the degree of safety and allowable stresses under given conditions; - apply theoretical knowledge to cases of technical practice.
- Syllabus
- 1. Basic concepts, difference between strength and stiffness. 2. Deformation stress, deformation curve, Hooke's law. 3. Mechanical properties of solids, elastic moduli. 4. Tensile and compressive deformation of solids (bars). 5. Strain energy under tensile/compressive stress. 6. Examples of tensile and compressive stress calculations in practice. 7. Deformation by simple and transverse bending (beams). 8. Deformation energy in bending stress. 9. Examples of bending stress calculations in practice. 10. Shear deformation and torsional deformation. 11. Shear and torsional strain energy. 12. Examples of shear and torsional stress calculations in practice. 13. Examples of combined stresses in practice.
