- By studying the subject of Sustainable Construction, students will gain advanced knowledge on the design and behavior of modern building materials. The traditional description of the behavior of building materials, based on physical and strength characteristics, will be expanded in this course to include material properties encompassing moisture and heat transport. The course will also cover the relationship between construction and the environment. It particularly focuses on new materials with higher added value, which are related to developments in the field and allow students to familiarize themselves with the latest trends in construction.
During seminars in laboratories, students will become acquainted with selected laboratory procedures and tests used for the preparation and testing of building materials, including their evaluation. Laboratory exercises will be conducted interactively, in the form of work in small groups. - Learning outcomes
- Upon completing the course, the student is able to:
- Describe the properties of real building materials, basic physical properties of building materials, and the relationship between the structure and properties of building materials;
- Understand the basic terminology, sustainability in construction, circular economy, and the basic assumptions for designing building materials with new properties that have potential use in construction;
- Characterize the different types of components of both traditional and modern building materials, their critical properties, and behavior;
- Search for detailed information about materials and work with them;
- Choose the appropriate material base, understand manufacturing processes, input materials;
- Summarize key information, interpret results, and combine knowledge from different scientific fields. - Syllabus
