Course objectives supported by learning outcomes
The course deals with project management, stages of business project management and the principles of creating and implementing projects in the corporate environment.
Learning outcomes
After successful completion of the course, the students:
understand basic terminology concerning life cycle of any project,
are able to create logical frame of a project,
understand the methodology of project management,
understand the wide context of business management,
understand the system relationship between knowledge and process groups of project management regardless of the methodology used for the project management,
know the business project portfolio,
are able to apply the process approach to business projects,
are able to apply the principles of Good Practice in project management,
have command of communication within the management and leading project teams,
assess projects in terms of the economic and qualitative parameters.
Syllabus
  • Lectures
  • 1. Introduction to project management, definition of terms, classification of projects, model and phases of the life cycle of a business project, basic principles guaranteeing good practice for project management
  • 2. Project triangle, Organizational structure of the project management team, their roles and responsibilities (focus matrix structure). Project-oriented organization. Roles in the project team.
  • 3. Stakeholders in corporate project management. Process approach to project management.
  • 4. Enterprise project preparation, project scope. Project management documentation.
  • 5. Methods and procedures for planning time (project duration) - Gantt chart, CPM, PERT, MPM, WBS.
  • 6. Methods and analyses for cost, resource and quality management of enterprise projects.
  • 7. Change and risk management during enterprise project management.
  • 8. Managing project communication and accountability.
  • 9. Methods and approaches to planning financial flows during enterprise project management, Monitoring in the project execution phase, EVM.
  • 10. Project content and closeout requirements, metrics, evaluation, documentation, stakeholder behaviors and requirements.
  • 11. Coordination and management of project portfolios and programs, project office.
  • 12. Project management standards, Project management according to International Project Management Association standards, Project Management Body of Knowledge, Project Management Institute methodology for managing enterprise projects, ISO 21 500. Certification of project managers.
  • 13. Indicators of economic evaluation in enterprise project management and management of value achieved. National and European projects, EU project life cycle.
  • Exercises:
  • 1. Introduction to the subject, Project plan; Business case. Project manager aptitude test. Discussion of seminar paper topics.
  • 2. Introduction of project management software, planning and selection of a semester project, setting project objectives.
  • 3. Logical framework. Graph theory - Eulerian move; Skeleton of a graph; Minimum move.
  • 4. Case study of the influence of stakeholders on the final form of enterprise project management, discussion of the need for standards for management practice; Working on a semester project: creating the organizational structure of the project, defining roles and responsibilities.
  • 5. Tutorial for Gantt chart, application of CPM (Critical Path Method), finding the critical path. Creating a task list to achieve the project goal (WBS).
  • 6. Practical application of cost and resource analysis.
  • 7. Creation of a project risk catalogue and matrix, risk assessment, selection of appropriate measures.
  • 8. Creation of a project responsibility matrix, project communication.
  • 9. Value-added analysis, project cost s-curve, CPI and SPI tracking.
  • 10. Project closure, related project documentation.
  • 11. Practical examples in project evaluation (qualitative and formal requirements).

For successful completion of the course, the students are required to achieve at least 70 points both from seminar work and final test (together) under the conditions specified below. The maximum number of points for seminar work is 30 points (30 %). The maximum number of points for final test is 70 (70 %). The grading of the course is thus 0 - 70 points for the final test and 0 - 30 points for seminar work: A 100 – 90, B 89,99 – 84, C 83,99 – 77, D 76,99 – 73, E 72,99 – 70, FX 69,99 – 30, F 29,99 – 0.

Teacher's information
Attendance in the course is defined in a separate VSTE internal standard (Evidence of student attendance at VSTE) for all forms of study. Students in full-time form of study are obliged to attend at least 70 % of the lessons (except for the lectures). Information for students with an ISP (Individual Study Plan). If a student with an ISP is unable to attend the interim assessment of a course, he/she will complete the interim assessment at a time agreed with the teacher. A student with an Individual Study Plan is required to contact the instructor immediately upon approval of the ISP. If the student fails to do so, his/her ISP will not be considered. Students with an ISP may contact the course advisor via email at 24574@mail.vstecb.cz if they have any questions.
