- The aim of the course is to provide the foundations of the theory of business management for students. The students will acquire knowledge and practical skills in terms of the nature and content of managerial functions (planning, organising, decision-making, managing, personnel management, communication, controlling), position, profile and managerial roles, management styles, organisational structures and the principles of their design.
- Learning outcomes
- Upon the successful completion of the course the student:
- understands the foundations of business management (difference between management and leadership, manger, typology of manager, profile, personality and role of manager),
- can define business as a system, categories of entrepreneurship, business activity, primary and secondary business functions,
- can characterise the content and meaning of basic managerial functions (planning, organising, decision-making, managing, personnel management, communication, controlling),
- masters the principles of designing classical and modern organisational structures. - Syllabus

- 1. Definition of the concept of management, developmental stages of management.
- 2. Business, entrepreneurship, primary and secondary functions of a business.
- 3. Systemic definition of a business.
- 4. Position, profile and personality of a manager, establishingf the profession of manager, styles of management.
- 5. Planning.
- 6. Organising.
- 7. Classical organisational structures.
- 8. „Modern“ organisational structure.
- 9. Leadership (motivation and stimulating).
- 10. Decision-making and decision-making processes.
- 11. Personnel management.
- 12. Communication in the process of management.
- 13. Company control.
- Seminars
- 1. The selection and classification of a business (in terms of legal form, size, competence, sectoral specialisation and life cycle of the business) including the basic description of primary and secondary functions.
- 2. The typology of managers (vertical and horizontal) and their characteristics.
- 3. Managerial competences and skills in accordance to the position of managers within the hierarchy of management.
- 4. The identification and description of the roles of managers within the hierarchy of management.
- 5. The selection and description the style of management.
- 6. The composition of management grid and its interpretation.
- 7. The identification of business aims (strategic, tactical and operative) in the main areas of activities of the selected business with the use of the rule of SMART.
- 8. The design of organisational structure of the selected business and its characteristics including providing advantages and disadvantages.
- 9. Setting the levels and scope of the selected organisational structure.
- 10. The motivation and stimulation of workers at the individual levels of management.
- 11. The identification of well and badly structured decision-making problems and an example of structure of the specific decision-making process.
- 12. The characteristics and assessment of communication flow / direction in the selected business.

essay – 30 points (i.e. 30 %)
Final test: final test – 70 points (i.e. 70 %)
The essay will be prepared according to the teacher's assignment. The test will be implemented in written form. The overall evaluation is the sum of points for the essay and the final test.
For successful completion of the course, the students are required to achieve at least 70 points both from seminar work and final test (together) under the conditions specified below. The maximum number of points for seminar work is 30 points (30 %). The maximum number of points for final test is 70 (70 %). The grading of the course is thus 0 - 70 points for the final test and 0 - 30 points for seminar work: A 100 – 90, B 89,99 – 84, C 83,99 – 77, D 76,99 – 73, E 72,99 – 70, FX 69,99 – 30, F 29,99 – 0.
It is compulsory, except of the lectures, for full-time students to attend 70 % lesson of the course in a semester, otherwise the students will automatically get “F”.
