The paper deals with the importance of the target language in the classroom, difference between learning and acquisition, the role of mother tongue in English language teaching, and the importance of the classroom environment for acquisition of a foreign language. There are defined typical situations where teachers tend to use either mother tongue or target language, and a few situations where mother tongue use is not seen as a disturbing factor.
