Abstract

V originále

This article responds to an article published in the journal Mladá Fronta Dnes. The key question of this article was whether the Czech children should start with English language in kindergarten. Respondent of this opinion declared his view mainly by the fact that a child has to master the mother tongue first before learning another one. The article highlights the exceptional abilities of children's senses and thinking that enable very young children to handle other languages with much greater efficiency, less stress and more interest. The argument is supplemented with results of scientific research that examines the activities of the human brain using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), as well as developmental psychology. The current situation of foreign language teaching in the Czech Republic is evaluated, including the successful method of teaching English for young children from a toddler age, whose founder is an English woman named Helen Doron.
