The article deals with the basic structure of the United States health care system, first by introducing the most important parts and showing how the system works. It points out the most serious problem of the system, mainly high number of uninsured people (which is currently changing for the better) and extremely high health expenditures. The article provides brief information about the recent health care reform, the expected solution for the health system. The reform has been dealing with high number of uninsured people as well as setting fair conditions of health insurance for all Americans. The article points out the newest OECD health data, showing enormous financial expenditures of American health care system, in comparison with other OECD countries and several successful numbers as well. The statistics show that despite the high technical quality of the United States health care and high financial expenditures, the results do not appear to be better than in other OECD countries. The United States health care system also has to deal with obesity as the number one health risk factor.

Tento článek se zabývá základní strukturou systému zdravotní péče ve Spojených Státech Amerických a ukazuje, jak systém funguje. Poukazuje na nejzávažnější problém v systému, zejména vysoký počet nepojištěných lidí (což je v současné době mění k lepšímu) a extrémně vysoké výdaje na zdraví. Článek poskytuje stručné informace o nedávné reformě zdravotnictví a očekávané řešení pro zdravotnictví. Reforma se zabývá velkým počtem nepojištěných lidí, stejně jako nastavením spravedlivých podmínek zdravotního pojištění pro všechny Američany. Článek poukazuje na nejnovější údaje OECD o zdraví, ukazujíc obrovské finanční výdaje amerického systému na zdravotní péči, ve srovnání s ostatními zeměmi OECD, stejně tak jako několik dílčích úspěchů systému. Statistiky ukazují, že i přes vysokou technickou kvalitu zdravotní péče a vysoké finanční výdaje, se výsledky nezdají být lepší než v jiných zemích OECD. Systém zdravotní péče ve Spojených Státech Amerických se musí taktéž vypořádat s obezitou jako s rizikovým faktorem číslo jedna.
