- The course is offered to students of any study field.
- Course objectives supported by learning outcomes
- Students will gain basic overview of the structure and basic properties of building materials and their applications in construction industry. In laboratories, they will get knowledge about selected testing procedures.
- Learning outcomes
- After completing the course the student: - can describe raw materials and basic production processes of classical and modern building materials; - can define the physical properties and relevant units; - can characterize individual types of components of classical and modern building materials, their technical properties, behavior; - can find technical sheets and work with them; - can describe the principles of selection and ordering of building materials; - can describe the processes of measurement, weighing, design of concrete mix and determination of concrete strength.
- Syllabus
- 1. Basic terms, raw materials, 2. Basic properties, quantities, units, methods of testing, 3. Building stone, aggregates, stone products, 4. Binders (hydraulic, air) - cement, lime, gypsum, 5. Concrete, mortar, 6. Building ceramics, brick products, 7. Metal, 8. Timber, 9. Glass, 10. Composite materials in construction, 11. Asphalts, bitumens, tar, polymeric materials, 12. Insulation materials (waterproofing, thermal, acoustic), 13. Auxiliary and other materials

- Evaluation methods: 70% written exam 5% preparation and presentation of the given topic 25% laboratory tests The written exam consists of two parts. The first part is the identification of building materials, the second part is the written exam itself. If the first part of the exam is not passed, the student does not proceed to the second part of the exam and will be classified as X. The identification of materials is an integral part of the exam and cannot be passed more times than the regular exams number. It is always necessary to pass circulatory tests.
