- 1.How do I set up a new course?
A new course in the Course Catalogue can only be set up by a person with the katal_a right. The course can be setting up in:
Information System Courses Course/Application operations (Edit) Setting up a new courseTo set up a course, simply fill in the mandatory fields in the simplified form. After it has been set up, all other information can be completed by another person, a holder of the lower katal_b right, or the head of the guaranteeing department.
- 2.Instructions for filling in basic course information
If you are starting to work with the Course Catalogue, please read the instructions for managing the Course Catalogue first.
This text only provides details on filling in the sections in the application:
Information System Courses [selected course] (Edit) Edit Basic Course-Related DataBasic course-related data is filled in by persons according to their access right level (katal_a, katal_b, and katal_c). The appearance of the form for filling in/changing/correcting basic data about a single course varies depending on the access rights of the person accessing it.
Course information is generally divided into two parts. The editing of basic information is performed by authorized persons according to their access rights. The editing of additional data is typically (in addition to authorized persons) filled in directly by the teachers. More detailed information on filling in supplementary course information can be found in the help section Where can a user fill in additional course data?
When editing basic course data, the selected faculty and term are displayed at the top of the page. This makes it easy to check whether the user is editing the correct course in the correct term. The details can be changed by clicking on “Edit selection” (at the top).
- 3.Basic course information sections and how to fill them in
Basic course-related data is filled in via the following application:
Information System Courses [selected course] (Edit) Edit Basic Course-Related Data- Course code
When setting up a new course, choose a suitable code. The course code must not be empty, it may only contain lowercase and uppercase letters without diacritics, the underscore '_', and it must not start with a digit.
It is not possible for two different courses to have the same code, not even if the first course has already been cancelled and will no longer be offered. The check for meeting study requirements is performed against completed codes; therefore, changing the meaning of a code would have very unpleasant consequences. Likewise, changing an already created code for a given course is strongly discouraged, especially after the course has begun to be taught.
- Select the department the course will be associated with
- The rights to edit the course are evaluated based on its categorization. A person who has the katal_a, katal_b, or katal_c right for the department listed in the mandatory field “Select the department the course will be associated with” can manage the course.
- Guarantor department
- The guarantor department bears the academic responsibility for the courses. It ensures the quality of the course content, provides the teaching staff, handles coordination and organization, and, last but not least, monitors consistency and continuity. Search for the responsible department or other workplace. You can remove a selected department by clicking the cross icon.
- Guarantor
- Enter the person who guarantees the course. Typically, this is one of the lecturers. The person listed here (must be from VŠTE) obtains the katal_c right to edit supplementary course information, as do other teachers of the course.
- Supplier department
- The supplier department is any workplace of the school to which the revenue for the enrolled students of the course will be credited. Multiple supplier departments can be entered. For each entered supplier department, the share of revenue for enrolled students can be selected as a percentage.
- “Cancel course” button
- The course data will be deleted. If you only want to block the use of this course, click on “Do not offer”. After you click “Cancel”, a confirmation “really cancel this course?” will appear (displayed at the bottom, at the end of the page). Unless you click “really cancel” again, the course will not be cancelled. A course can only be cancelled if no other applications are linked to it – i.e., no one has registered for it in the given term yet.
- Offer/do not offer this course?
- Courses marked as “do not offer” will not be available to students for registration and enrollment and will not be displayed in the Catalogue Browser.
- Pre-fill the form with the content of another course
- If you are setting up a course similar to another one (set of teachers, similar names...), you can simplify your work by entering the code and term of the model course and clicking “Search”. All sections except for the course code section will be pre-filled.
- Name
- This section allows you to enter the course name in the language of instruction.
If you cannot correctly type letters with diacritics, contact your ICT support – your browser is not configured correctly. The application allows entering names including characters of national alphabets.
- Short course name in the language of instruction (max. 30 characters)
- For the purposes of listings with limited space (various lists, etc.), enter a suitably shortened name.
- Language of instruction
- Czech is typically selected here, but if the course is taught in another language, please specify by selecting from the menu. If the course is taught in another language that is missing from the menu, write to vsteis@fi.muni.cz. We will add the requested language to the selection immediately.
- 4.Section for selecting persons involved in teaching the course
In the form within the application for filling in basic course information:
Information System Courses [selected course] (Edit) Edit Basic Course-Related Datayou can enter several persons involved in teaching the course (typically teachers). For each person, their classification/role is recorded. Persons classified as lecturers implicitly obtain the katal_c right (editing the course syllabus and other information). If a person is not in the university database, fill in their details manually and assign them a representative from the school's staff who can be contacted more regularly.
Persons involved in teaching have various rights within the course:
- Lecturer
- Persons classified as lecturers and course guarantors have the katal_c right assigned by default. This right allows them to add and remove other teachers (e.g., assistants for grading essays) or edit supplementary course information. They can change seminar groups, select persons for sending e-mails, export lists, and import lists.
- Seminar tutor
- They can change seminar groups, select persons for sending e-mails, export lists, and import lists. A person listed as an instructor will only be included in the course opinion poll for the seminar they teach.
- Assistant, Alternate Examiner
- A person listed in the course as an assistant or alternate examiner will not be listed in the course opinion poll. An assistant cannot send mass e-mails in the course. Neither a alternate examiner nor an assistant can confirm the correctness of the data entered for the course.
Overview of personal rights according to selected applications, which behave differently depending on the assigned right:
- Course Catalogue
- Persons with the katal_c right (i.e., lecturers and course guarantors who have this right assigned implicitly) can add and remove other teachers (add other lecturers, seminar tutors, as well as assistants for grading tests or essays). Persons with the katal_c right can also edit supplementary course information (see more detailed help Edit syllabus and additional information provided). A full listing of course information in the Course Catalogue and confirmation of the correctness of the data entered in the Course Catalogue can be performed by persons listed in the course as lecturer, seminar tutor, contact person, or guarantor, as well as the head of the course's guaranteeing department.
- Operations with seminar groups in the course
- Information about seminar groups may only be changed by a person entered in the course as a lecturer or seminar tutor. Seminar group information can be changed if the editing option is enabled for the given term.
- Student Course Opinion Poll
- A person listed in the course as an assistant or alternate examiner will not be listed in the course opinion poll. A person listed as an instructor will only be included in the course opinion poll for the seminar they teach.
- Selection of persons for sending e-mails, export list, import list
- Applications for mass work with course students may only be used by a person entered in the course as a lecturer or seminar tutor.
More details about individual rights can be found in the help question Who can work with the Course Catalogue?
Specify a primary person, easily reachable by e-mail, who can be contacted for consultations regarding the course, especially if the teacher is an external staff member. One of the teachers can also be specified. In the Course Catalogue, the contact person can only enter or edit persons involved in teaching or the contact person, or designate a person to handle student requests for an exemption/consent to enrollment. They have the same access to applications in the Teacher's Notebook as a teacher.

- 7.Enrollment restriction section: how do I set the required courses (prerequisites)?
For course enrollment, obligations to have completed other study requirements may be established. You refer to other courses by their course code. Required courses (prerequisites) for a course are entered in:
Information System Courses [selected course] (Edit) Edit Basic Course-Related DataThe following conditions can be set:
