Nice places to visit in Setúbal Avenida Luísa Todi Luísa Todi was a Portuguese lyrical singer from Setúbal in the 18th century who sang in French, English, Italian and German. She was acclaimed by royal courts and applauded on the most prestigious European stages of the time. Praça do Bocage (Bocage Square) Bocage was an important portuguese poet of the 18th century, considered the greatest representative of Arcadianism and the precursor of Romanticism. In this square, in addition to the poet's statue, are the City Hall and the Church of Saint Julião. The City Hall was built during the reign of King João III, but has undergone several renovations over the centuries, and only the original façade remains. The Church of Saint Julião was founded by fishermen and stands out for its Manuelinestyle porticos and inside it displays a collection of tile panels with scenes from the life of the martyr, Saint Julião. Convento de Jesus (Convent of Jesus) The Convent and Church of Jesus are true milestones in Portuguese architectural history, marking the beginning of the Manueline style. The project was born at the end of the 15th century by the hands of the architect Diogo Boitaca, who signed works on monuments such as the Jerónimos Monastery, the Belém Tower and the Batalha Monastery. In the Convent of Jesus, innovative solutions were used at the time, such as rounds arches, vaults resting on depressed arches and ribbed networks. The church is famous for its beautiful twisted columns made of Breccia da Arrábida, a reddish stone that is extremely rare in portuguese soil, existing only in the Serra da Arrábida. Casa da Baía (Bay House) More than a tourist information office, it is a space for experiences – and for that reason, it has already received an award. The bold colors are deliberate, so that it stands out among the line of two-story houses that stand in this area of Avenida Luisa Todi. Mercado do Livramento (Livramento Market) It is a market for agricultural and fish products, considered as the main market in Setúbal. The current building dates back to 1930 and has replaced the original building inaugurated in 1876. The most recent renovation took place in 2012. Inside, the tile panels that portray the various economic activities in the city, by the portuguese engraver and painter Pedro Pinto, stand out, dating from 1929. At the north entrance, on both sides, there are two other panels by Rosa Rodrigues, with images of the city, dating from 1944. In June 2014, the American magazine USA Today recognized Mercado do Livramento as one of the best fish markets in the world. Jardim da Beira-Mar (Seaside Garden) By the riverside area, this garden, with a pedestrian path along the river Sado, offers a superb view of the Tróia Peninsula and the Serra da Arrábida.
