- The course deals with project management, stages of business project management and the principles of creating and implementing projects in the corporate environment.
- Learning outcomes
- After successful completion of the course, the students:
understand basic terminology concerning life cycle of any project,
are able to create logical frame of a project,
understand the methodology of project management,
understand the wide context of business management,
understand the system relationship between knowledge and process groups of project management regardless of the methodology used for the project management,
know the business project portfolio,
are able to apply the process approach to business projects,
are able to apply the principles of Good Practice in project management,
have command of communication within the management and leading project teams,
assess projects in terms of the economic and qualitative parameters. - Syllabus
- Lectures
- 1. Specification of terminology, success rate in business project management, classification of projects. Project management according to the standard of International Project Management Association.
- 2. Persons interested in business project management. Project Management Body of Knowledge, methodology of business project management according to Project Management Institute.
- 3. Organizational structure of the project team management, its role and responsibilities.
- 4. Process approach to project management, model and stages of business project life cycle.
- 5. Basic principles ensuring Good Practice for project management. Preparation of business project, scope of project.
- 6. Project management documentation.
- 7. Methods and approaches to project scheduling, resources and quality.
- 8. Methods and approaches to planning financial flows in business project management.
- 9. Changes and risk management in business project management.
- 10. Monitoring in the stage of project implementation, acting and requirements of persons involved in the project.
- 11. Contents and requirements for project completion, metrics, evaluation of documentation.
- 12. Coordination and management of project portfolios and programmes, project office.
- 13. Indicators of economic evaluation in business project management and management of the value achieved.
- Seminars
- 1. Planning and choice of semester project, case studies of extensive governmental projects, extensive projects in private sector, discussion on the extent, scope and technological complexity of the project and its quality, speed of its submission, planned and final budget.
- 2. Case study of the involved persons´ influence on the final form of business project management, discussion on the need for the standards for managerial practice, testing of abilities to be a project manager.
- 3. Work on semester project: creation of the project organizational structure, defining the roles and competences, creation of list of task to achieve the project output (WBS).
- 4. MS Project and procedures in MS Excel, tutorial for Gantt chart, application of CPM (Critical Path Method).
- 5. Case study – projects of EU structural funds, creative game for project management (slogan, inbound marketing, product, and service improvement).
- 6. Creation and examples of documentation for semester project – specification of the project scope (Scope Statement), specification of goals and scope, acceptance criteria for tasks (Statement of Work), specificities and directives for tasks.
- 7. SWOT matrix of the project, application of stage-gate-protocol for the individual project stages.
- 8. Plan of resources for business project management, case study on given topic.
- 9. Financial budget for business project management, case study on given topic.
- 10. Creation and examples of precautionary measures in business project management, options for project changes and their discussion.
- 11. Documentation for the completion of business project, handover protocol and its requirements, metrics and quality indicators.
- 12. Project communication (preparation and running of project team meetings).
- 13. Practical examples of project evaluation (qualitative and formal requirements).

For successful completion of the course, the students are required to achieve at least 70 points both from seminar work and final test (together) under the conditions specified below. The maximum number of points for seminar work is 30 points (30 %). The maximum number of points for final test is 70 (70 %). The grading of the course is thus 0 - 70 points for the final test and 0 - 30 points for seminar work: A 100 – 90, B 89,99 – 84, C 83,99 – 77, D 76,99 – 73, E 72,99 – 70, FX 69,99 – 30, F 29,99 – 0.

- Attendance in the course is defined in a separate VSTE internal standard (Evidence of student attendance at VSTE) for all forms of study. Students in full-time form of study are obliged to attend at least 70 % of the lessons (except for the lectures).
